These resources (Slide Deck and Family Guide) are designed to support a multigenerational collaborative activity, in which children and grandparents or other family members engage together, either virtually or in-person, to create a ScratchJr story.
This specific resource uses the story of Noah's Ark, but the activity structure can be adapted to any story, ideally one that grandparents are familiar with. This resource is also designed to be held as a virtual "Create-Along" event, which allows families to connect if they live far from one another, however the structure can be adapted to an in-person event as well.
The session is designed to promote collaboration and connection across generations through the use of ScratchJr. Grandparents or other family members will use the Family Guide, and the guidance of the session facilitator, to tell a story to their grandchild and then work with them to retell that story on ScratchJr. The children will serve as the lead programmers, while family members support the experience with guiding questions, new ideas, and story structuring.
The Slide Deck is designed for the facilitator of the session to structure the time. The session is broken up into 3 creation sessions, in which families are given one part of the process to work on: 1) Telling the story and planning the project; 2) Starting to program the story; 3) Adding details and narration.
